Wall treatment

We live in an old house. As many of you old housers know the walls in some rooms can get pretty ugly!

The plaster cracks and chips and once you patch them it is almost impossible to get a nice paintable surface again, short of replacing the plaster with Sheetrock.

Before

Afters

Here is a solution that is cheap, easy and fun to do!

We took a bucket of joint compound(bought at our local hardware store for around $10.00). First, thin the compound out with water to the consistency of pudding. Next, roll it on your walls like paint(you will want to patch any holes or cracks you have first, but they don't need to be perfect). You can pick different napes on the rollers to get the desired texture you are looking for. It's really that simple, and once it dries you can then cover it with your favorite color of paint.

We have done this in several of our rooms and love the way it looks! This treatment would be great in new houses too, giving those flat walls a little more pizazz!

Stop over to Kimba's DYI party and check out some other great ideas!

I happened accidentally on this wall treatment. Wanted an expensive textured paint to put on the upper wall in our living room(it has barnwood on the bottom). Lowe's was out. Not wanting to wait I wandered around looking for an alternative. Saw the joint compound and was going to do what you suggested, put it on and paint over it, since it says it's tintable only to pastels. The helpful girl at the paint counter said she COULD tint it the color I wanted which was a rosy terracota color and she did! It ended up costing much less than the paint would have. We put in on with a roller that had a deep nap on it and I think I went back with a sponge and dabbed some more texture here and there if it wasn't enough to suit me.

What a neat idea. I live in a house with drywall, but I have to remember this in case we ever live in an older home.

You may have just saved me a ton of money and Time! We live in a 1917 house with cracks in the ceiling and walls. I'm totally going to try this because we were thinking of sheetrocking over it and that would be tons of time and money!!!!!! I am featuring this on somedaycrafts.blogspot.com in a couple of days. I have lots of walls like your before pictures! On one of the rooms we have redone I used the tissue paper technique but think this may be the way to go on the rest of the house!

I just read the first comment about tinting it! That sounds interesting too!

I just have to say that I was quite amazed when I was browsing blogs and came acrossed this post. I just finished my spare bedroom which had 5 layers of wallpaper that I needed to removed. And what did I find underneath...a wall full of cracks that needed repairing...ugh. But what also surprised me was we have the same red transferware plates hanging on our walls.

Funny?!

I have photos posted...check out if you get a chance.
